How does MLD benefit the post-operative period for each particular cosmetic surgery procedure?
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
The main effects felt are a relief from tightness and itching.
Reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction)
Tightness as well as itching is much relieved.
Gynaecomastia (male breast reduction)
Tightness as well as itching is much relieved.
Augmentation mammoplasty (breast augmentation)
These patients feel discomfort mainly because of the stretching of the skin, and MLD alleviates this.
Liposuction
Liposuction is one of the procedures where MLD is most needed.
Many doctors send patients for endermologie and/or MLD, partly because liposuction is a wet technique, which means that there is more fluid than usual that must be excreted post-surgery. In addition there is almost always a considerable amount of bruising and swelling.
The faster the excess fluid is excreted, the quicker the skin can retract, and corrugations and unevenness can be avoided. Also, once the swelling is addressed the the supply of nutrient and oxygen rich blood necessary for healing becomes more effective.
Rhytidectomy/mini-rhytidectomy (face-lift)
These patients are also good candidates for multiple post-op sessions, as you cannot hide your face! MLD helps the patient to feel much less tight and swollen, or uncomfortable. The slow stroking of the face also helps alleviate itching or irritation.
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
Again, these are patients who cannot hide their surgery, so faster healing is important. Sometimes results can be seen straight after the treatment, and usually by that evening, or the following morning.
