Swelling
As one of the main functions of the lymphatic system is to rid the body of excess fluid, MLD can help speed up this natural process.
- Treating swelling due to chronic wounds.
- Trauma or injury with bruising and/or swelling (oedema) and/or decreased mobility.
- Venous insufficiency
- Lymphoedema
- Lipoedema
- Swelling (oedema) after treatment for cancer (surgery/radiation therapy/chemotherapy)
MLD, being a very gentle manual technique, is designed to have an effect on fluid components and lymphatic structures located in superficial tissues, i.e. the skin and the subcutis, which is a layer of connective tissue between the skin and muscle tissues. The faster this fluid is excreted, the faster the swelling subsides. The main effects felt are a relief from tightness, itching and discomfort mainly because of the stretching/contracting of the skin.
The faster this excess lymphatic fluid is excreted, the quicker the skin can retract, and nutrient and oxygen supply to the tissues becomes more effective.
